Niños Héroes Academy was built in 1981 to relieve the overcrowding at
the Sullivan Elementary School. Niños was built with state funds and designated as a
magnet school. In 1981 the school was approximately 43% Hispanic, 42%
African- American
and 15% Caucasian. As the ethnic population in the neighborhood changed so did the ethnic
ratios of the school.
The school was named after a historic event in Mexican history. The
event took place at a military school for young men and boys. When their school was
attacked, they valiantly fought until a few of the young men were trapped on the roof.
After continued fighting, they refused to surrender. Instead, they wrapped themselves in
Mexican flags and jumped to their deaths. These brave young men became known as the Heroic
Children or Los Niños Héroes. Our school proudly
bears its name and our children honor the memory of these brave young men.
We welcome all guests and parents to our school.
